THE MANAGEMENT OF HEC GORNA ARDA DISCUSSED THE HYDROPOWER PROJECT’S DEVELOPMENT WITH OFFICIALS IN KARDZHALI, SMOLYAN AND ARDINO

On August 2 and 3, Werner Casagrande, Chairman of the Management Board, and Günter Wailzer, Member of the Management Board of Hydro Power Company Gorna Arda, entrusted with projecting, constructing and exploiting the hydro power cascade of the same name, had a series of working meetings in Kardzhali, Smolyan and Ardino. They shared details about the project’s course of development with Kardzhali’s Regional Governor Iliya Iliev, Smolyan’s Regional Governor Nedyalko Slavov and representatives of Ardino Municipality - the Deputy Mayors Izet Shaban and Nasko Kichukov and Municipal Council Chairman Sezgin Bayryam.

For achieving better coordination between the various authorities relevant to the project’s implementation, an interministerial working group has been formed under the guidance of Deputy Energy Minister Nikolay Nikolov. It encompasses experts from the Ministries of Energy, of Environment and Water and of Regional Development and Public Works, as well as representatives of NEK and EVN. The purpose of its work is to find the most suitable form of implementing the cascade in view of all legal and normative requirements, both on a national and European level.

Another topic of discussion during the meeting was the inclusion of the Gorna Arda cascade project in the River Basin Management Plan for the East Aegean region for 2016-2021, which currently is at the stage of public consultations. HEC Gorna Arda has filed the necessary documents and maintains contact with the East Aegean River Basin Directorate and the Ministry of Environment and Water.

‘The team of Hydro Power Company Gorna Arda continues working on the project’s update to make sure that it lives up to today’s requirements for economic, technical and environmental compatibility, Werner Casagrande noted.

All parties expressed in the meetings their willingness to continue the dialogue and their cooperation for swift implementation of the hydro power project that would contribute to the region’s prosperity.
