Krivus Fortress

The mediaeval fortress of Krivus can be found 1.56 kilometers northwest from the center of Bashevo village. It had an important defensive role in the region of the Arda River. It was built around the X century upon a picturesque rock over the Arda River. Here the river forms one of its most famous meanders. Krivus is surrounded by high and beautiful slopes, inhabited by villages with specific local architecture. The Fortress of Krivus was mentioned in the annals of the Byzantine historians. The archeological findings show decorations, Christian crosses, coins and weapons. The fortress was supplied with water through an underground tunnel.
The western half of the fortress is taken by a citadel with a rectangle form, sized 50 meters to 40 meters. A legend says that many Bulgarian women and girls were locked in it. Some documents argue whether the fortress of Krivus is in fact the fortress of Patmos, mentioned by the Greek annalist George Acropolit.
