Karaburun Peak

The Karaburun Peak (in Turkish “Black cape”) is 1027 m in height and is located on the watershed between the rivers Malka Arda and Arda, just before the two rivers flow into one another. From the area there is a great view to almost the entire Central and Eastern parts of the Rhodope Mountains.
Due to its strategic location in V-VI century there was built an early Byzantine fortress, from which currently has revealed portions of a stone building foundations and walls. Excavations show that there was a sanctuary of 1500 years old and in VI century after Christ there was a fortificated village where the trade roads in Middle Rhodope were controlled.
